30th Anniversary - VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society Anniversary Meeting Recognized Outstanding Volunteers

The VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society celebrated its 30th Anniversary at its April 21st meeting by recognizing founding members and charter members who were present and presenting awards to outstanding society members. Mr. Otis Alexander, Directory of the Danville Public Library, explained how the genealogy society and Danville Public Library can work together to better serve the community.

Muriel Davis, Mary Leigh Boisseau and Charlotte L. Lowther were awarded Honorary Life Membership for outstanding volunteer service. The three members were presented with a plaque and Board Resolution detailing their contributions to the society. Each of the honorees is a charter member of the society and has volunteered in excess of 2000 hours. The recipients were nominated by an active Society member and approved unanimously by the Board.

Muriel Davis has contributed many hours as president of the society, as a researcher and as a volunteer in the society’s search room.. She also has participated in numerous projects benefiting the society.

Mary Leigh Boisseau has contributed many hours to the formation of the society, compiled cemetery records, compiled a number of books which she has donated to the society, taught genealogy classes, represented the society and genealogical research in other organizations, and served as president. She has served as a contributing editor of the society’s publication since its inception and an active board member.

Charlotte L. Lowhter has contributed countless hours as librarian of the society, maintained a roster of volunteers and insured volunteers were available to out of town researchers even if the search room was not scheduled to be open. She has acted as a liaison between the library and the society, contributed articles to the society’s publications, and volunteered in the search room. In addition to her volunteer hours, she has served as an invaluable resource person and board member.

In addition to presenting the Honorary Life Membership award, the Board presented Certificate of Achievements to Robert Byrd, Julia Byrd, Cynthia Owen Hewett, Lois C. Walker and Marie L. Jones. Each of these recipients have been members of the Society for 10 years or more and volunteered in excess of 1500 hours.


29th Anniversary - VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society Anniversary Meeting Recognized Outstanding Volunteers

Marillyn V. Halstead, Bill Greer and Bernard C. Calvert were presented with Honorary Life Membership at the 29th Anniversary celebration of the Virginia-North Carolina Piedmont Genealogical Society meeting held April 5th. The three members were presented with a plaque and Board Resolution detailing their contributions to the society. Each of the honorees has been a member for more than 15 years and has volunteered in excess of 2000 hours. The recipients were nominated by an active Society member and approved unanimously by the Board.

Marillyn Halstead is a charter member of the Society and has served as corresponding secretary and office manager. She contributed many hours to the formation of the society, compiled cemetery records, contributed to and helped assemble the first issues of the Bulletin. She researched and developed several of our books. The basement of her home housed the vertical files and served as an assembly room for the Bulletin prior to having the Search Room in the Library.

Bill Grier has been a member of the Society for over twenty years and has served as Treasurer and computerized our membership files. He contributed many hours to getting our finances in order, securing our first computer and first copier. He was a contributing editor of our publication, assisted in getting our publication printed and mailed.

Bernard C. Calvert is a charter member of the Society and served as the first president. He contributed many hours to the formation of the society, compiled cemetery records, contributed to and helped assemble the first issues of the Bulletin.

In addition to presenting the Honorary Life Membership award, the Board presented Certificate of Achievements to Mary Leigh Boisseau, Ken Colby, Michael H. Compton, Muriel Davis, Anna Dodson, Roger Dodson, Betty M. Fuller, Kate J. LePine, Charlotte L. Lowther, Ralph E. McCormack, Virginia G. Parris, Lee Robertson, R. Lee Wayland, Jr., Julian B. Johnson, L Kermit Law, and Lorena Eaker. Each of these recipients have been members of the Society for 10 years or more and volunteered in excess of 1500 hours.

The purpose of The Virginia-North Carolina Piedmont Genealogical Society is to preserve and to share local records with persons having interest in the Virginia Counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, and Franklin and the North Carolina Counties of Caswell, Person and Rockingham. The collection of the society is housed in the Danville Public Library and is open to the public. An all volunteer staff is available during posted hours to aid in the search of family history information. Meetings of the society are held the first Thursday of each month in the auditorium of the Danville Public Library.
