Obituary Search - Information
We are in the process of indexing and creating a searchable data base of all obituaries the Society has collected from area newspapers and copies of obituaries donated to the Society. We have over 120,000 obituaries in our current collection which we plan to include on our webpage as the indexing is completed. Most of these records are now included on our webpage and ready to be searched. The obituary listing includes first name (middle name and maiden name are considered a part of first name), last name as of date of death, age at death, date of birth, or date the obituary appeared in the newspaper, funeral home, cemetery and location of obituary book containing a copy of the complete obituary. All of these fields may be searched. For example, if you know only the funeral home that handled the funeral arrangement and the last name of the deceased, those two fields may be searched. Obviously, the more information entered about the deceased individual, the better the chance of finding an exact match. Once a match is found, a complete copy of the obituary may be found in our search room in the obituary book (volume) shown in the obituary location field. The only charge associated with obtaining a copy in our search room is our regular copy charge which is presently twenty-five cents per page.
If someone wishes to obtain a copy of the obituary and cannot visit our search room, a volunteer will make a copy of the obituary and mail it to you for a fee of $4.00 Additional obituaries may be ordered for $1.00 each if mailed at the same time. When requesting a copy of an obituary, please include full name of the deceased individual, volume location of the book which contains the obituary and a check payable to VANCPGS to cover handling and postage.
The obituary project is ongoing and will be placed on our website as the contents of the various obituary books are entered.
