Society Search Room
The VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society Search Room is located on the second floor of the Danville Public Library, 511 Patton Street, in downtown Danville, VA. It is adjacent to the Library Genealogy Room and contains the material of the Society, all catalogued and cross-referenced. Volunteers research for specific data on a limited basis for out-of-town members. For a mail request to be honored, it must include a SASE and some provision for postage. Researchers may use these materials when volunteers are present. A copy machine is available to make copies of material at a nominal cost.
The Society's holdings are a collection of over 5000 books, early maps (Civil War, VA and NC counties), microfilm, microfiche, journals and newsletters from genealogical societies in over 20 states, local cemetery and funeral home records, obitiuaries, city directories from 1878, etc. The vertical file folders on families, places, and events are in 44 file drawers in alphabetical order cross-referenced with card catalog. The computer collection contains over 100 family files donated by members and others. In addition, the collection includes disks of the "World Family Tree" of the Family Tree Maker© program and the Ancestral Files and IGI from the Church of the Latter Day Saints.
The Search Room is closed on days the Public Library is closed.
